E a 3ª Grande Virada?

Eus estive no Brasil no ano passado. Eu conheci essas pessoas maravilhosas (Flávia Vivacqua, Felipe Simas e Ana Terra).

O dragão mora for a dessa zona.

John Croft is now in Rio to talk about Dragon Dreaming. He gave us the following interview:

Johnn, would you introduce yourself and what you do?

When people ask me what I do, I say I make people’s dreams come true through Dragon Dreaming.

What is Dragon Dreaming?

A really short answer is: it is love and action. The longer answer is a living system way of creating projects and organization successful for the great turning.

What is the great turning?

We are in the 3rd great turning. The first great turning happened 10 thousands years ago, when we stopped being hunters and started living in farms and cities. That took hundreds of years to happen. The 2nd great turning happened with the European exploration of Africa and exploration of Americas. That created the world we know today.

What about the 3rd turning?

The 3rd turning is about how do we take a worldwide cultural belief in endless growth and turn it into a sustainable one. For this tuning, we don’t have hundreds of years, but only 10 or 15 years, what makes it the most exciting turning.

What stimulated you to come to People’s Summit?

I was in Brasil last year. I met these wonderful people (Flavia Vivacqua, Felipe Simas e

Ana Terra) and they are responsible for my presence here and for taking me to talk in different places such as the “ Degrowth Conference”. I was in Copenhagen Summit. I wanted to see if anything would change in a political level, but nothing changed. But if enough people change, politics will have to change and people change is huge.

What potentials do you see here (People’s Summit)?

I’m aware of 2 things: problems of the worlds are getting bigger, but at the same time, our skills are also getting bigger. It is gonna take all of our kills to make the change. So how can we liberate collective intelligence? Dragon Dreaming and Permaculture are part of the techniques to wake up the world. I don’t know if we are gonna make it, but I also don’t know if we won’t gonna make it.

How does Dragon Dreaming works?

Every project starts with a dream, but 90% get stuck. The reason is people don’t share their dreams. To make a dream come true, you need to share it. That´s the first step of Dragon Dreaming. The second one is you need to make a plan, but 90% of them, don’t work and the reason is people try to control the world. They create 2 groups of people and blame each other: there is the group of planners (usually the white, male and older people) and the group of doers. So usually the project do not last a year and collapses. People also forget to celebrate, which is the 4th step of Dragon Dreaming. You need to celebrate everything you do. For each one of these steps (dreaming, planning, doing and celebrating) you need a type of people. Obviously there are gonna be conflicts. The best way to deal with them is to create projects as a game. This way, you have a team to play and when the game is finished, the dream come true. We play win-loose games. We gotta play win-win games.

A few days ago, you were in an event called “Synergies for transition”. What do you understand by these term?

Synergy happens when you liberate collective wisdom. When a group can achieve much more working as a group than with their selves. When this happens, it feels like magic and there is a light that comes out of people’s eye. The best way of liberating this synergy is making people’s dream come true.

How can we connect to these dreams?

We all have dreams, but we forget them. The aboriginals in Australia say when you forget your dream, you loose your soul. The dream comes out of your land, your country. Aboriginals believe that you start dreaming when your mother feels you move for the first time. The mother gets the message form the country she is standing. The land owns us. So when the baby is born, the story the baby is taught is the story of its land. The baby has the responsibility to take care o that land. That’s the secret of sustainability: land care, people care.

What is your dream?

There are now more than a 100 dragon dreamers in Brazil. My dream is to multiply this by a thousand.

Why Dragon Dreaming has this name?

There are 3 reasons. I will give you the shortest one: you have a comfort zone. The dragon lives outside your comfort zone. When you learn to live with it, you liberate your power because it is where the dragon is. You don’t need to look for your dragon. When you are doing a project, he will find you.

At this moment, Ana Terra asks John to read a quotation form his journal (probably from Nelson Mandela): “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that scares us…”

  2. Agora tá fazendo sentido. … you have a comfort zone. The dragon lives outside your comfort zone. When you learn to live with it, you liberate your power because it is where the dragon is. You don’t need to look for your dragon. When you are doing a project, he will find you.
